What does Pride mean to you?
It’s a question that’s asked on many occasions, and one that has no fixed answer. The meaning of Pride is different for every individual.
To some, it’s the empowerment of love and solidary in embracing their every-being. For others, it’s the call to stand up and fight for their right to live and love as equal.
As July 2017 marks the 50th anniversary since the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales, Gay Times spoke to 39 influential LGBT+ figures across the community from around the globe to discuss Pride.
From actors, musicians, activists, and everyone in between… this is the meaning of Pride.
“Recently, I’ve felt that Pride has become extremely important again, and much more politicised from any time I can remember since the eighties,” reveals actor and screenwriter Mark Gatiss.
He’s joined alongside actor, singer and RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Todrick Hall, who says: “Pride to me is not only being proud of who you are and embracing everything that makes you special, but also being proud of where you came from.”
Comedian Bethany Black adds: “Not having to hide who I am or be apologetic for any of the things I can’t change about me. Not having to be scared anymore.”
