Camryn Colen and Lexie Colen
“We just went in to the office, just like and couple would, we applied for the license and they pretty much signed off and gave us our papers. They didn’t ask for my information, other than name and stuff, they asked for her ID (Lexie) and that was all.”

Not everything the law says should be taken for granted. At least this is what Kim Davis, a county clerk from Kentucky, chose to consider, when, following the legalization of the gay marriages, went and filed a petition to the Supreme court, stating that she wants to be empowered to refuse gay marriages, should she chose to. Little that she knew, she was going to marry a young couple, belonging to the exact category that she so ardently refused to serve. Whether she wanted to, or not.

Camryn Colen (30) and Lexie Colen (21) seem like your everyday couple and this is how the clerk viewed them in February this year, when she married them. There is but one difference: Camryn Colen is a transgender, while his wife Lexie is pansexual, making this the most colorful couple, which the clerk ever had the chance of uniting. That is, completely unwillingly, of course.

They didn’t ask for my information, other than name and stuff, they asked for her ID (Lexie) and that was all.” Camryn declared, in an interview for The Courier-Journal. If Kim Davis would have asked for Camryn’s papers, she would have noticed that he’s birth certificate still identifies him as being a female.

Despite being a bit reluctant to stand out and defend their cause, due to social stigmatization, the young couple decided that the LGBT community needs their voices to be heard. Building a safer and nondiscriminatory world for their newly born child is a matter of greater importance than anything else. “We want everybody to be equal and everybody to be looked at the way we were, when we went it to get our license” said Camryn, while his wife Lexie, declared: “She saw us walking in there like we were just a normal straight couple, which we are, and I think she should look at everybody like that”

More than 100 people gathered, Saturday, in front of Davis’ office, holding banners saying “Obey the Law” and “Equal rights”, while 2 gay couples and 2 straight ones, filled lawsuits against Davis, asking for the law to be applied.

Davis’s response was that her religious beliefs prohibits her from associating with the LGBT community, that she doesn’t regret her decision and that she will not resign from her 80.000$ a year job. Nor that she will ever give licenses to gay couples. Never again, that is.

Let’s watch this couple speaks out about being married by conservative clerk:
