Jim Parsons, the actor and star of The Big Bang Theory, outed in 2012, stated that he wasn’t ever actually living a “closeted” life, but when a reporter once outed him as a gay man he felt relieved like a ton of bricks were lifted off his shoulders. He said that he never really tried to hide the fact that he’s gay, but at the same time, he wasn’t broadcasting the fact either. He said that he doesn’t care what anyone thinks of him and hopes his fans still love him and is sure that they still do, if not more. He stated “I never had a coming out piece, I just didn’t mention it. I took Todd with me to events….and then finally one day while working on Harvey I did a piece with Patrick Healy for The New York Times and he just point-blank asked, ‘Was working on The Normal Heart meaningful to you as a gay man?’ And I was like, ‘Well, yeah. Yeah.’ And what a wonderful…. I can’t tell you what a wonderful thing that was, what a gift he gave me with one question.
It was suddenly out there and official.” He said he often thought about why no one had noticed or said anything to try and reveal him, he guessed everyone just thought it wasn’t their business to out someone who wasn’t out. But once the reporter outed him his life changed dramatically, in a good way. Jim has been with his partner Todd Spiewak since 2002. They told Inside Actors Studio it was a blind date as to how they met, at a karaoke bar of all places. “I hate karaoke. Oh my god do I hate- Tell them what you sang,” Jim said to Todd. He sang, “I Found Someone”.
Healy wrote: “’The Normal Heart” resonated with him on a few levels: Mr. Parsons is gay and in a 10-year relationship, and working with an ensemble again onstage was like nourishment, he said.”
Jim’s sexuality had been the source of media speculation for several years. Though Times doesn’t identify Jim’s partner, the actor thanked Todd Spiewak during a 2010 Emmy Award acceptance speech. He has shown up to awards shows and made public theater contributions together with Spiewak, reportedly an art director, on several previous occasions.
The National Enquirer also reported that Jim and Todd were at one time engaged and planning a Massachusetts-based Christmas wedding, which has since allegedly been called off because Jim doesn’t want children. None of this has ever been confirmed nor denied by Jim or any of his representatives, who have continually declined to speak about their client’s sexuality, according to AfterElton.
Jim is also thought to be the highest paid gay actor in Hollywood. He was recently added to the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. He joked: “It is a funny place to honor anyone! ‘we will put your name right on the ground.’ And if there is gum there? Come on, it is the ground!”
