Hollywood actress, Ellen Page, took part in the event of first LGBT pride in Jamaica, despite a warning that the activists of this parade could face violence from people who don’t support LGBT community.
She was an Oscar nominee for the film “Juno.” Ellen Page made her coming out as a lesbian at the beginning of last year.
The actress has joined the flashmob in support of LGBT people in Jamaica, despite the fact that gay relationships are prohibited there. Men who have gay relations in Jamaica are punished with imprisonment up to 10 years. While same-sex relationships between women are not punished in Jamaica at all.
Activists for the rights of LGBT people in Jamaica are constantly faced with violence and harassment during such parades.
In spite of this fact, the organization “Jamaica Forum of Lesbians, All-Sexuals and Gays” (J-FLAG) held the first Gay Pride weekend in Kingston.
The organization has published in a social network an appeal made by Minister of Justice in Jamaica – Mark Golding, who showed his respect for this event and called people for tolerance.
It was the second time when activists tried to organize Gay Pride in Jamaica. The first time wasn’t successful because gay activists were forced to abandon the public action of the Pride. So, this time, activists decided to do it in the form of flash mob.
The coming out of actress Ellen Page gay activists called “magical and inspiring.” Being a lesbian and also, an openly gay actress Ellen understands these people pretty well and supports their choice.
