Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne, who recently played the role of Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, is back on the big screen in full force. After portraying a famous man, he is now going to be playing… a woman! Based on the 2000 book of the same name by David Ebershoff, The Danish Girl – directed by Tom Hooper – is an upcoming American biographical drama film and love story set in the 1920s. The movie is slated for a November 27th 2015 release and it’s creating a lot of buzz because of the storyline.
The story portrays the real life account of Einar Magnus Andreas Wegener who was a famous artist that lived “comfortably well” with his wife Gerda. She, too, was a famous artist and in the latest movie trailer we see Gerda somehow – and by accident – causing Wegener to realize his true identity, when posing for a portrait after the original model fails to show up.
What ultimately happens is Wegener not only develops an attraction for a female physical appearance, but begins to live as a woman, going by the name of Lili Elbe. As you can now imagine, their partnership becomes difficult and their relationship is soon tested as Wegener – or Lili Elbe – becomes more in tune with who he (she) truly is. This leads Elbe to become the first recipient ever to have male-to-female sex reassignment surgery, and Gerda supports this decision. However, their marriage is further strained when Gerda simply realizes Elbe is no longer the person she had married.
In an interesting turn of events, and to make matters a bit more complicated, a childhood friend of Elbe shows up in the film and they form a complex love triangle!
There is no doubt that this film will be highly controversial among conservative groups after it hits the big screen.
