Attendees and watchers of the Brazilian GQ awards must have been stunned when 2 of the sexiest men in the film industry kissed. Bruno Gagliasso(best known for roles in Passione and Sinha Moca) locked lips with actor/writer Joao de Vicente Castro (best known for A Noite da Virada and A Molher do Prefeito). Both are well known for playing macho roles.
In the message following his tweet of the picture, Bruno, who is a well-known LGBTQ supporter, explains that this was done for two major reasons.
First, to send a message of support to the LGBTQ community in the country who are still facing discrimination despite Brazil having legalized the Same-Sex marriage. This is a particularly bold move as there have been over 216 people killed since Brazil signed Same Sex marriages into law. Life has become even more difficult for LGBTQ people and their supporters as they live in fear of being victimized.
Secondly, he did this to show that straight or not, it is perfectly normal to show affection. A government sponsored study found that 41,532 women were murdered in Brazil between 1997 and 2007. It was also seen that the law tended to blame the victims of these offenses, instead of the offenders. According to government officials and NGO workers, most of these criminal complaints are suspended inconclusively, without punishment being meted out to the offenders.
Brazil saw the largest turnout in the world of LGBTQ and supporters in the Sao Paulo Gay Pride of 2009, numbering over 4 million people. Needless to say, it seems LGBTQ supporters have decided not to sit on the sidelines anymore but to actively support their friends and family. With this one move, Gagliasso and de Castro are saying ‘it is alright to soften up, guys and let love shine through’!
