Archbishop warns of ‘rainbow plague’ amid LGBT tensions in Poland

Marek Jedraszewski, the archbishop of Krakow, made the comments during a homily to mark the 75th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising.
"We also know that our land is thankfully no longer affected by the red plague (taken to be a reference to communism), which does not mean that there is no new one that wants to control our souls, our hearts...
Boris Johnson’s Commons majority cut to one as Conservatives lose Welsh seat to Liberal...
Britain's new Prime-Minister Boris Johnson suffered the first serious blow to his leadership on Thursday when his ruling Conservative Party lost a seat in Wales, cutting its working majority in parliament to just one.
The seat in Brecon and Radnorshire was won by Jane Dodds, the candidate for the Liberal Democrats, who overturned a majority of more than 8,000 votes to beat Conservative Chris Davies.
The by-election was triggered when 19% of voters signed a recall petition after Davies was...
Biden steadies ship while setting up impending clash with Warren
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - After two sets of Democratic presidential debates, it appears that Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren, at least at the moment, are two high-speed trains on a collision course.
Biden, the former vice president, likely did enough at Wednesday’s debate in Detroit to ease concerns among supporters that his front-runner status was in immediate danger after his underwhelming performance in the first debate in June.
This time around, he mounted a more combative defense...

Barack Obama, silent in Democratic nominating contest, omnipresent in debate
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former President Barack Obama was not on the Democratic presidential candidate debate stage on Wednesday night, but he was omnipresent as 2020 hopefuls struggled with attacking the legacy of their party’s most popular member.
Coming under heavy attack from more liberal, lower-polling candidates, front-runner Joe Biden frequently invoked Obama in his defense, the first black president, for whom he served as No. 2 for eight years.
Obama enjoys vast popularity not just in his party, but...
As Democrats squabble, Trump worries some Republicans with his Twitter battles
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Some of U.S. President Donald Trump’s allies worry his racially charged fights with opponents are hurting his re-election chances even as Democratic rivals make things easier for him by bickering over their own key policies.
Trump faces no serious challenge from within his Republican Party, the economy is growing, and two televised debates this week highlighted the divisions within the Democratic Party over healthcare, immigration and criminal justice reform.
That combination of factors could allow...
Rivals target progressives Sanders and Warren in U.S. Democratic debate
DETROIT (Reuters) - Progressive candidates Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren bore the brunt of attacks from more moderate rivals in the second round of U.S. Democratic debates on Tuesday, spotlighting the ideological divide among the party’s crowded presidential field.
The Democrats on stage were united in stressing the urgency of defeating Republican President Donald Trump in the November 2020 election, but delivered bruising critiques of their party rivals’ positions on issues like healthcare and immigration.
Trump has been eager...
Moderate Democrats use debate to attack liberal rivals over Trump
DETROIT (Reuters) - Moderate candidates forced their way into the debate conversation on Tuesday night by assailing as “political suicide” the agenda championed by liberal front-runners who have dominated the 2020 Democratic presidential primary race.
It was the moment in the spotlight the more centrist contenders in the crowded field had been waiting for as they try to break into the top tier. But in their push to stem the party’s leftward lurch, they spent more time attacking the...
Rome strikes deal with five EU nations over stranded migrants
Italy said on Wednesday it would allow an Italian coastguard ship to finally disembark 116 migrants who were stranded for days in a Sicilian port, ending its latest standoff with the European Union over migration policy.
Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said he had reached a deal with the EU for Germany, France, Portugal, Luxembourg and Ireland to take in the asylum seekers who were rescued at sea last week.
The Bruno Gregoretti coastguard ship was given permission to dock but...
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson arrives in Belfast, Brexit’s major battleground
Boris Johnson has travelled to Northern Ireland for the first time since assuming his role as UK's prime minister to tackle several issues in government and on Brexit.
Meeting for talks with the country's five main political parties on Wednesday, Johnson is expected to encourage cooperation to restore the region's power-sharing government, which collapsed in 2017.
Brexit is also expected to feature in discussions as Johnson's hardline approach to the UK leaving the European Union with or without a deal will...
The Warren-Sanders wing comes up short
DETROIT — The progressive all-stars lost in a draw.
Facing a field of more-centrist Democrats trailing them in the 2020 presidential primary polls, liberal Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., locked arms at Thursday's CNN debate here to make the case for their "Medicare for All" health insurance plan and other "bold progressive" changes to public policy.
If they were going to demonstrate convincingly that it would take big, bold progressive policy ideas to beat President Donald Trump, surely...
