Variety. Despite being one of the most high-profile gay actors in the business (he earned an Oscar nomination this year for his lead role in Rustin), he revealed that he’s recently discovered he’s got plenty of female admirers. Domingo and some girlfriends attended Essence Fest in New Orleans earlier this year.
The event is a celebration of black culture and many of those attending recognized Domingo. He says he was surprised at the number of women who were excited to meet him. “I had become, in many ways, a heartthrob for Black women,” he said.
“They were hugging and kissing on me, and some even whispered, ‘I know you don’t play for our team, but I have a crush on you.’”Subscribe to our newsletter for your front-row seat to all things entertainment with a sprinkle of everything else queer.Domingo was thankful and tickled by the attention. “I said, ‘You can still have a crush on me! I still want you to think I’m hot and sexy, and I’ll flirt with you too. We don’t have to limit ourselves.’ Because I never limited myself.
I’ve imagined myself having wives and children and husbands and everything.”A post shared by Colman Domingo (@kingofbingo)Domingo has played many straight characters, including in The Color Purple and If Beale Street Could Talk. Although it’s not surprising that he should have female fans, his anecdote once again strikes down the Hollywood myth that gay actors can’t be cast in high-profile straight roles, romantic or otherwise. Many in the audience simply do not care about the sexuality of the actor.Elsewhere in the interview, Domingo discusses a forthcoming straight role, but one with controversy attached. He’ll have a prominent role in the big-budget Michael Jackson biopic due to hit screens next year.
The movie will feature one of the late pop star’s nephews, Jaafar Jackson, as Michael Jackson, with Domingo as father Joe Jackson. Jackson Sr. was a domineering father who ruthlessly pushed his kids towards stardom.
