In 2011, the population of Ireland was about 6.6 million, ranking it the second-most populous island in Europe after Great Britain. As of 2016, 4.8 million live in the Republic of Ireland, and 1.8 million live in Northern Ireland.

According to recent reports, new guidelines for the medical care of intersex infants born in Ireland are being developed by Children’s Health Ireland (CHI), which oversees children’s hospitals in the country. As reported by the Irish Independent, the news emerged after former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar posed a parliamentary question about the issue.
