Let’s unwrap this week’s edition of “Bop After Bop”…Subscribe to our newsletter for your front-row seat to all things entertainment with a sprinkle of everything else queer. It’s hard to reimagine a classic like WHAM!’s “Last Christmas,” and though Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan and ROSÉ have all recently tried, nothing quite comes close to George Michael’s original delivery of this iconic Christmas track. Luckily, to commemorate 40 years of “Last Christmas,” WHAM! has released a special Last Christmas 40th Anniversary EP, including a previously unreleased live rendition at Wembley Arena, that feels like unwrapping a nostalgic gift that’s been waiting under the tree.
Julien Baker and TORRES have gone full yeehaw, and it’s as sweet as it sounds. After debuting their first single as a duo on The Tonight Show and performing live at Mercury Lounge, “Sugar in the Tank” has fans saddling up for more with it’s harmony-laden vocals and shimmering pedal steel.
The track was born from the duo’s shared experiences of growing up queer in the south, the duo reclaiming the genre on their own terms with a fresh, joyful spin (something new from Baker), acting as the perfect teaser for their forthcoming collaborative album. The teasing for Olly Alexander’s forthcoming album continues, this time with the release of the ‘eternally optimistic’ new single, “Archangel.” The track is a brighter offering than previously released singles from this project, shimmering with ’80s-inspired synths and drum patterns that deliver a transcendent and playful sound for Olly.
In a statement, he described the song as a tribute to an “angel” who supported him through a dark time—whether literal or mythical is left ambiguous. With its uplifting and radiant feel, “Archangel” offers another glimpse into Polari, Alexander’s solo debut, arriving February 7.David Guetta has finally dropped his rework of Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s iconic queer anthem “Relax” on streaming services.
