Heartstopper’s Yasmin Finney reflects on “rocky journey” with family after coming out

Heartstopper star Yasmin Finney opened up about her “rocky journey” with her family in a new interview.

Since making her debut in the critically acclaimed Netflix rom-com series, the openly trans 19-year-old has positioned herself as one of the most promising emerging talents in the entertainment industry.

From her highly anticipated appearance as Rose in Doctor Who’s 60th-anniversary specials to gracing the cover of various high-profile magazines, Finney’s upward trajectory is showing no signs of slowing down.

In addition to her growing acting resume, the young talent has made waves within the LGBTQ+ community due to her inspiring and powerful journey as a trans woman.

In a recent interview with GQ, Finney shed further light on her transition and how her mother initially reacted to her gender identity.

“It’s been a rocky journey, but eventually she accepted me, and accepts me. My family are very Catholic, so they have a ‘one rule for all’ situation, and I kind of just broke from that, as did my mum,” she explained.

“I feel like my family lives this life of being cautious of everything; if anything was slightly out of place, too this, too that, they’d hate that.”

While Finney admitted that it took “a while” for her mom to absorb her gender identity, the two are now closer than ever.

“It’s like I was never born male to her,” she added.

Towards the end of her interview, Finney was asked if she gets tired of discussing her gender identity, to which the young starlet responded: “It’s not that, it’s just like – I keep talking about it, but I wish there was change, and there’s just no change.

“Obviously I’m only 19, but I have a lot more I need to do. People look at my life now and think I’ve hit the top, but I’ve not yet,
