Michael Henry is known for his irreverent, funny YouTube videos that usually shine a light on queer life, dating and sex. His latest offering looks at the issue of crystal meth use among some gay men. It starts out with some jokes, such as Henry’s horror over someone on Grindr seeking to play “Tennis.”Subscribe to our newsletter for a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.A friend he’s chatting with wonders why that should be unusual.“Yeah, but the T in tennis is capital,” points out Henry.
“You know, like Tina, PnP, crystal meth.”Henry goes on to say that he believes some gay men use crystal meth to feel intimate. Or to make themselves feel better about having gay sex, “which they were probably told was disgusting.”The man Henry spots on Grindr is Jared, the boyfriend of a friend, Maxwell. Maxwell now enters the scene and Henry and his chum decide to quiz their buddy about Jared.
In short, does Jared use crystal meth?Maxwell admits that yes, sometimes his boyfriend uses crystal. He says he’s new to Los Angeles and he met a group of friends that used the drug and he started using it to hang out with them. They then ask Maxwell, who’s getting increasingly uncomfortable, if he’s done crystal with his boyfriend.
Maxwell at first declines to answer before saying, “When you date someone sometimes you do things that they have an interest in.”Henry goes on to express concern that “sometimes” use of crystal meth might turn into an “everyday” thing. The video doesn’t delve much further. However, in the comments, many gay men had something to say. “Meth is extremely addictive and the effects it has on a person are frightening,” said one.
“Folks, don’t do drugs. And don’t tolerate either. Michael: thank you for bringing up this scary topic.”One man shared his own experiences, saying he’s been clean and sober since 2015.
