recent letter to Oregon Live. In it, he laments that he and his partner are often asked the dreaded question whenever they’re around other gays.Subscribe to our newsletter for a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.“aRe YoU oPeN?”“My partner and I are gay men in our 30s. We are in a committed, monogamous relationship, and we seem to be the only ones,” he writes.
“When I’m in spaces meant for queer people and I mention that I’m in a relationship, I often get asked, ‘Are you guys open?'”While he says he supports other people being in open arrangements, he finds the prodding over the top“I can’t stand it,” he adds. The man’s frustration is understandable. It can be very, very annoying to always have to answer in the negative! But it’s important to remember the majority of gay people actually do practice monogamy, despite the hype heaped upon open setups.
Take one highly cited survey, for instance. Approximately 32% of gay people reported being in open relationships, opposed to just 2% of heterosexual couples. That is quite a wide disparity, but keep in mind… 32% is still a minority.
That means roughly 2/3rds of gay people practice monogamy. Or at least say they do…That brings up another problem with statistics on open relationships: cultural acceptance. An overwhelming 75% of gay and bisexual people say it’s appropriate for adults to have an open marriage, compared to just 29% of straight people. What does that mean? Some of those straight dudes are lying! Just ask their “shattered partners“…DL guys are more than just faceless avatars on Grindr trolling for hookups.
