UK Black Pride 2022 broke records last week, becoming the largest Black Pride celebration in the world. The all-day event, held on Sunday, August 14, hosted over 25,000 people and showcased around 50 performers.Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, who is known as Lady Phyll, one of the event’s co-founders and its current executive director, announced onstage that the Federation of Black Pride had officially recognized the event as the largest Black Pride event in the world.Certainly, the event has grown since 2005, this year moving to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford after outgrowing other venues.

Despite the vocal opposition to a new school policy by a large crowd of community members, a Wisconsin school board approved a measure prohibiting teachers and staff from displaying LGBTQ+ Pride flags or symbols and other items deemed "political." The policy also forbids the use of preferred pronouns.Employees are prohibited from displaying political or religious messages, such as pride flags, Black Lives Matter signs, or We Back the Badge signs, or specifying their pronouns in emails per the district's code of conduct.Kettle Moraine High School library was packed with people wanting their voices heard on Tuesday, and Milwaukee's ABC affiliate WISN reports the public comment period had to be extended from 30 to 60 minutes to accommodate many, but not all, of the speakers. The school superintendent told board members in July he's clarifying the employee code of conduct to remove pride flags from classrooms and pronouns from email signatures.The move is based on the school district's policy that prohibits "partisan politics, sectarian religious views, or selfish propaganda," CNN reports.According to superintendent Stephen Plum, expressing identity is political, uncomfortable, and thus prohibited at Kettle Moraine School District."The expectation is that teachers and administration will not have political flags or religious messaging in their classroom or on their person. This expectation includes Pride flags," Plum said at a school board meeting last month, WISN reported.

WASHINGTON — The White House, under pressure to contain a growing monkeypox outbreak, announced on Thursday that it was sending 1.8 million vaccine doses to jurisdictions that agree to use a new vaccination protocol, as public health officials prepare for Gay Pride events and the return to college campuses, which they fear could hasten spread of the virus. The Biden administration has not acquired additional doses of the monkeypox vaccine. Instead, it is trying to stretch the existing stockpile by promoting a different method of administration that uses one-fifth as much per shot.

The US will provide 50,000 monkeypox vaccine doses to be administered at Pride and other events with high attendance by gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.

In communities across the United States, LGBTQ+ people and their families are facing a growing number of significant barriers to equal rights and protections. In 2022 alone, at least 30 states have introduced anti-LGBTQ+ bills, with a majority targeting transgender and non-binary youth, on top of continued anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and bias in various states across the country. Despite progress toward equity and inclusion, the LGBTQ+ community is increasingly struggling for equality and basic human rights.

The first known film with a gay love story was made more than 100 years ago.Greatly predating Brokeback Mountain, Making Love, and all the rest, the 1919 German film Different From the Others tells the story of two men who fall in love, one a prominent musician and the other his protégé, and are threatened by a blackmailer. The film argues for the acceptance of homosexuality.The Outfest UCLA Legacy Project restored the film to the extent possible a few years ago. The Legacy Project is a partnership between Outfest, Los Angeles’s LGBTQ+ film festival, and the University of California, Los Angeles, Film and Television Archive.
