An online exhibit that details Montgomery County’s LGBTQ heritage launched on Thursday on the Montgomery History website. The county’s LGBTQ history is one of both triumph and struggle.
With D.C., Baltimore and other more progressive cities nearby, the push for equality in the county often went overlooked, despite the fact it had some of Maryland’s earliest LGBTQ rights law.
This exhibit follows three themes in Montgomery County’s LGBTQ+ history: Law and Activism discusses the struggle for equal rights through past events, Health discusses the county’s response to the AIDS epidemic and two ACT UP protests and Community Life follows how LGBTQ people have built a community in the county through events and businesses.
All three topics primarily cover the 1970s-1990s. “We view this exhibit as a starting point for future work to represent Montgomery County’s diverse history more fully,” said Montgomery History Executive Director Matthew Logan.
