A record number of Americans now support same-sex marriage, according to a new national poll. Seventy percent of Americans favor allowing same-sex couples to marry legally, including 80% of Democrats, 76% of independents and half of Republicans, according to the 11th annual American Values Survey conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute.
The poll also found that support across religious groups has increased for same-sex marriage. Religiously, support was high among white ‘mainline’ Protestants at 79 percent, Hispanic Roman Catholics at 78 percent, and non-Christians at 72 percent.
