Gay Deputy Sheriff Is Florida's First Line-of-Duty COVID-19 Casualty

Deputy Shannon Bennett, a gay man who had been with the Broward Sheriff's Office in Florida for nearly 12 years, has died of complications from COVID-19.

Bennett, 39, died Friday night, the sheriff's office announced in a Facebook post over the weekend. He had left work March 23 after not feeling well.

He went to the hospital the following day and was tested for COVID-19. The results came back positive March 27, and he died a week later.
