Raphael Varane has sent a message with his "full support" to Adelaide United's Josh Cavallo, who on Wednesday became the only known top-flight footballer in the world to come out as gay.
Former Newcastle Jets striker Andy Brennan was the first to come out whilst still playing, as well as former LA Galaxy player Robbie Rogers who announced he was gay upon retirement in 2013 before returning to become a MLS Cup winner.
Former Premier League footballer Thomas Hitzlsperger in 2014 came out after retiring. "Growing up being gay and playing football were just two worlds that hadn't crossed paths before," Cavallo said in a statement.
