The new documentary Luther: Never Too Much captures the story behind Vandross’ unparalleled artistry and accomplished music career.

On New Year’s Day 2025, audiences were once again captivated by the music and mythology of Luther. Subscribe to Native Son’s newsletter for more news, information, and conversations about Black gay and queer everything.Directed by Dawn Porter, the documentary features cameos from Mariah Carey, Richard Marx, Lisa Fisher, and more of Vandross’ closest friends and musical collaborators.

The movie first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2024, before debuting in select theaters during the fall of 2024 and CNN on January 1.

Using archival footage of Vandross and interviews with those who knew the Harlem-born singer best, the documentary offers an intimate look into the life of one of the world’s most prolific musical icons.
