Joker: Folie à Deux. The eagerly-anticipated Joker sequel from director Todd Phillips debuted October 4 in the US. After negative press reviews following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival a month earlier, the movie tanked. It took around $58 million in the US and $208 worldwide–far short of the $1 billion taken by its predecessor. However, cinephile Waters has placed it at number six in his annual round-up of the year’s best movies.
Writing for Vulture, Waters said, “Finally, a love story I can relate to. So insane, so well thought out, so well directed, so much smoking!”Subscribe to our newsletter for a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.“It’s Jailhouse Rock meets Busby Berkeley with a 9/11 That’s Entertainment! ending that will make you shake your head in cinematic astonishment. Stupid critics.
Gaga so good. Joker so right. Die, dumbbells, die!”Joker: Folie à Deux currently has a 32% audience rating on aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.2 rating on IMDB.
It clearly wasn’t just critics who were disengaged with the narrative-light, 2-hour-10-minute musical. The movie was also snubbed in this season’s Golden Globe nominations. Waters is not the only notable director to speak out in Joker 2’s defense.
In October, Quentin Tarantino appeared on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast and praised it.“The Joker directed the movie,” Tarantino said about director Phillips. “The entire concept, even him spending the studio’s money — he’s spending it like the Joker would spend it, all right? And then his big surprise gift — haha! — the jack-in-the-box, when he offers you his hand for a handshake and you get a buzzer with 10,000 volts shooting you — is the comic book geeks.”“He’s saying f*ck you to all of them, he’s saying f*ck you to the movie audience, he’s saying f*ck you to Hollywood. He’s saying f*ck you to anybody who owns any stock at DC and Warner Brothers […] And Todd Phillips is the Joker.
