Manchester Council is set to pass a motion on improving trans rights across Greater Manchester later this week. Labour councillor Jon-Connor Lyons, who represents Piccadilly Ward, has proposed the motion which has been seconded by Fallowfield councillor Jade Mary Doswell.
The 'Trans Rights Are Human Rights – It’s Time To Do More’ motion calls on the council to conduct a review of council services 'to ensure they are as accessible as possible to trans and non-binary people'. The motion comes at a time where hate crimes against trans and non-binary people in the UK are continuing to rise. Just last week, LGBT Foundation severed ties with the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) after the organisation released ‘extremely damaging’ statements relating to conversion therapy legislation and reforms to the Gender Recognition Act (GRA).
In addition, Stonewall said the two statements 'effectively seek to exclude trans people from improved rights and protections'.
