James Gunn Says Velma Was Written As Gay in 2002's 'Scooby-Doo' But The Studio Blocked It

James Gunn revealed a little known fact about 2002′s popular Scooby-Doo movie, which he wrote the script for.

Over the weekend, the 53-year-old filmmaker responded to a fan who urged him to return to the franchise and write Velma, who was played by Linda Cardellini, as gay.

Turns out, that James did – but that version of her didn’t make it to screen because the studio blocked it. “I tried!

In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script,” James wrote back.
