It was a hard night for Democrats November 2, as candidates for governor in two heavily Democratic states lost enormous support — and at least one of the two seats — to Republicans.
But LGBTQ candidates scored some milestones according to preliminary returns. This included the first openly LGBTQ Muslim to win a Georgia election, taking a seat on the Atlanta City Council; the first black LGBTQ person to win election in the state of Montana, winning a seat on the Bozeman City Commission; the first transgender candidate to win election in Ohio, to a local school board; and the first openly LGBTQ woman to win election to the Detroit City Council.
