In a massive blow to LGBTQ+ rights, Oklahoma governor Kevin Stitt has signed another bill targeting trans youth. On 19 May, conservative lawmakers in the state’s Senate and House of Representatives passed the archaic SB 615 with a 38-7 vote.
Under the harmful legislation, schools will require students to use restrooms that reflect the gender on their original birth certificates.
The law will be enforced in both public schools and charter schools with students between pre-school and 12th grade. The bill also states that students who don’t comply with the rules will be subjected to using a “single-occupancy restroom or changing room.” If a school chooses not to follow the bill’s provisions, it will be subjected to a reduction in state funding and could face potential legal action from parents.
Due to the bill containing an emergency clause, SB 615 will take effect immediately. Since signing the bill into law, LGBTQ+ activists have slammed the extremely harmful bill with some threatening legal action.
