Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi quoted the Bible to defend legislation in Georgia restricting early voting on Sundays during a Senate hearing Wednesday.
Hyde-Smith launched into a biblical rant during the Senate Rules and Administration Committee’s hearing on the For the People Act, which would expand voting rights.
The Georgia GOP’s proposal to ban Sunday voting is seen by many critics as a thinly veiled effort to stop Black churches from conducting “souls to the polls” voter drives that were credited with helping Democrats win two historic Senate elections in the Peach State earlier this year. “God’s word in Exodus 20:18, it says remember the Sabbath and keep it holy,” Hyde-Smith told the committee.
