A post shared by Chris Calfa (@princesschriscosplay)Chris Calfa isn’t your average cosplayer. A trained costume designer, he takes inspiration from beloved heroines — like Disney princesses and the witches from Wicked — and turns their iconic looks into stunning gender-swapped costumes for himself. He not only shares his cosplay on Instagram, he also wears them in real life at New York Comic Con, BroadwayCon, FlameCon and other public events. While Calfa looks like he’s having fun, it takes hard work to put his lewks together.
His costumes based on Elphaba and Galinda from Wicked took him nearly seven months to put together, partly because of his high attention to detail.
Occasionally, he’ll hire tailors to help create his custom looks.“I’m always trying to make myself a better maker,” Calfa said in a recent interview. “The trick is to give yourself enough time and to make sure that it’s something you’re actually going to love to make.”He announced that he’s starting his own costuming business so he can make a living off of his passion.
In the meantime, he’s also working on his costume based on the Scarlet Witch, the Marvel character who appears in the recently released Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.
