Star Trek introduces first gender non-conforming characters

Star Trek: Discovery season three will feature the franchise’s first non-binary and transgender characters. According to Deadline, non-binary character Adira will be portrayed by newcomer Blu Del Barrio, who it describes as ‘highly intelligent and confident’. Ian Alexander, known for his role in Netflix series The OA, will play transgender character Gray who is ‘empathetic and warm’.Star Trek’s executive producer Michelle Paradise told Deadline the show has always aimed to ‘give visibility to underrepresented communities’ as it imagines a future without divisions based on race, sexuality or gender.

Michelle hopes that the gender non-conforming character’s stories will be depicted with ‘understanding and empowerment’.Blu Del Barrio will play.
