Gregory Wayne Abbott (born November 13, 1957) is an American attorney who has served as the 48th governor of Texas since January 20, 2015. A member of the Republican Party, Abbott previously served as the 50th attorney general of Texas from 2002 to 2015. He is the third governor of any U.S. state to permanently use a wheelchair. He is also the first disabled governor in Texas history.

The Texas Tribune reports. Its passage came in the third special session of the legislature this year.It represents a major victory for supporters of the legislation, which had failed to pass the House three times earlier, once in regular session and twice in special sessions, the Tribune notes.

It had passed the Senate easily each time and is expected to do so again. Gov. Greg Abbott, a far-right Republican, is likely to then sign it into law.State Rep.

Valoree Swanson, the Republican who authored the bill, said it would only codify the policy already followed by the University Interscholastic League, which regulates public school sports in Texas.
