When Adele won the Brit Award for Best British Artist earlier this month, I was as delighted as the next person. I’ve always been a big Adele fan, and that award was definitely well deserved.
I smiled as she came on stage and delivered her acceptance speech. When she said the words: ‘I understand why the name of this award has changed (to be gender-neutral) but I really love being a woman and being a female artist.
I do!’, I thought nothing of it – I also love being who I am. So I was shocked the next day to see it suggested that Adele was being ‘slammed’ for her saying she loved being a woman, and even that she had outed herself as a culture warrior.
Immediately I knew that something was off, as her remarks were in no way offensive. Looking into it further it became clear that this alleged ‘slamming’ was a small number of people online suggesting her comments were derogatory, followed by parts of the media blowing a few social media comments way out of proportion.
