A US federal court has handed a major victory to trans campaigners, ruling schools shouldn’t ban trans students from using the bathroom that matches their gender identity.
The 4th Circuit Court was ruling in the long-running case of Gavin Grimm. The transgender man sued his Virginia high school after it banned him from using the boys’ restroom.
Subsequently the case became a major test of whether US bathroom bans are legal. In a 2-1 decision, the court ruled Title IX of the Education Amendments Act protected Grimm.
