The American Medical Association (AMA) has urged state lawmakers across the US to veto bills which aim to limit young trans people’s access to gender-affirming healthcare, according to NBC News.
In an open letter addressed to the National Governors Association, AMA CEO James Madara affirmed that trans and gender diverse identities “are normal variations of human identity and expression”.
Madara said any decisions made regarding young trans people’s healthcare “must be sensitive to the child’s clinical situation, nurture the child’s short and long-term development, and balance the need to preserve the child’s opportunity to make important life choices autonomously in the future.” They also pointed out that receiving gender-affirming.
