A federal judge in Maryland has ruled that a Catholic nonprofit organization illegally discriminated against a gay employee by denying spousal benefits to his husband.U.S.
District Judge Catherine C. Blake said Catholic Relief Services, based in Baltimore, violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bans sex discrimination, and another federal law, the Equal Pay Act of 1963, when it withdrew the benefits from the employee’s husband, reports The Daily Record, a Maryland newspaper.
The employee is identified in the suit by the pseudonym John Doe.When Doe was hired as a data analyst for the agency, he was told it provided health insurance to employees’ spouses regardless of sex, according to his suit.
That was in the middle of 2016. However, in November of that year, he was told the benefits were granted to his husband in error, his suit states.
