v. Superior Court of Los Angeles. Assembly Bill 5, signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom in September 2019, updated state laws to comply with that decision.AB 5 generally only allows workers to be considered "independent contractors" and not employees in situations where the independent contractors could set their own prices, earn double the minimum wage or more, and have direct communication with customers. Thus, AB 5 had a number of sweeping consequences for many industries including music, freelance writing, trucking, the arts, and sex work.
