rejecting trans kids began to circulate in state houses this January. At the same time, online, sprung a meme: “Tell me you’re X without telling me you’re X.” To play, you announced a category you belonged to and posted a wry picture to prove it. “Tell me you have a toddler without telling me you have a toddler” captioned a photo of Legos and Cheerios jumbled on the floor. “Tell me you’re a grad student without telling me you’re a grad student” introduced an image of a coffee cup, a stack of books, and an empty wallet.
People nominally told “without telling” — but they were clearly telling, and showing, too. The meme, comically, demanded it.
