introduce a new transgender character into the MCU in the upcoming series Disney+ series Ironheart. The series focuses on genius teen inventor Riri Williams, who has created the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man.

Dominique Thorne (Judas and the Black Messiah) has already been cast to play the titular role, but the show is also casting a new character that caught queer fans’ eyes — not to mention finally giving some hints about the series that has largely been kept very much under wraps.According to POC Culture, Marvel is looking for a “Black, Latina, or Afro-Latina transgender woman who is around 18-22 years old.” The casting call goes on to describe the character further, reading, “The character will be smart, confident, and with a mystical bent and unique sense of humor.

She’s also described as unapologetically nerdy about things that excite her…even if they might be terrifying to others.”This is the latest in a series of encouraging moves by Marvel, whose history of representation has been spotty in the past.

There was, of course, the infamous blink-and-you’ll-miss-it queer moment in Avengers: End Game that left many infuriated in part because it was teased to be a breakthrough moment for the franchise. However, the MCU did better by LGBTQ+ fans with Eternals, which introduced the franchise’s first-ever gay superhero, Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), who was both married to a man and shared a kiss with him.In the Loki series, its eponymous character (Tom Hiddleston) was confirmed to be both genderfluid and bisexual.
