The US House of Representatives looks likely to get its first openly gay black member this November – Mondaire Jones. Jones has now won the Democratic primary for New York’s 17th District.

But, while he will face a Republican opponent in the November general election, the area is a Democratic stronghold. Jones, who is a 33-year-old attorney, said in a statement: ‘Growing up poor, black and gay, I never imagined someone like me could run for Congress, let alone win. ‘Indeed, in the 244-year history of the United States, there has never been an openly gay, black member of Congress.
