They were a series of spontaneous demonstrations by gay activists in response to a police raid that began in the early morning of June 28, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn, in Greenwich Village, New York.Stonewall patrons, as well as clientele from other Greenwich Village gay and lesbian bars, fought back against the police when they became violent.
