McBride said, “The only way that I can guarantee that while I may be a ‘first’, I’m not the last, is to quite simply be the best member of congress that I can be.”McBride previously served in the Delaware Senate.

She was one of three new LGBTQ+ lawmakers who joined Congress on Friday. The other two are Julie Johnson (D-TX) and Emily Randall (D-WA), the first queer Latina in Congress.

In a statement welcoming their arrival, Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson said, “The American people deserve a bold vision for our country, one led by champions who bring experiences to the table that have often gone unheard.”“Sarah McBride, Julie Johnson, and Emily Randall are those trailblazing champions.
