A gay couple has been caned 77 times each for having sex in Indonesia, according to local reports. The couple, aged 27 and 29, where whipped in front of witnesses which included locals and their family members in Aceh today.

They were arrested for having sex with the same sex at a boarding house in the Kuta Alam District. Their sentences were initially 80 lashes but they were reduced by three each because they had been in detention for three months, Detik News reports.

The person handing out the lashes was changed around half way through, after being caned 40 times. Shocking photographs show the pair wincing in pain as people watch.
