HBO’s critically acclaimed series Los Espookys has been cancelled after two seasons. The show, which was co-created by Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega and Fred Armisen, follows a group of friends in Mexico City who use their love for the horror genre to create a business that fabricates fake scary situations.
Upon its release in 2019, the series received praise from critics and audiences for its hilarious storylines and unapologetic LGBTQ+ characters like Úrsula (Cassandra Ciangherotti) and Andres (Fabrega).
After nearly three years off the air due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the series returned for its highly anticipated second season in September – which ended up earning 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
However despite Los Espookys continuing to garner praise from TV viewers, HBO announced on 2 December that the show would not be returning for a third season. “We are thrilled we could deliver the unique and hilarious second season of Los Espookys to viewers finally, more than three years after the series premiere, due to pandemic delays,” the cable network said in a statement (per Variety). “We thank Julio, Ana and Fred for this imaginative and delightfully bizarre world they created.
