Jerrod Carmichael apologised to Jennifer Coolidge “on behalf of all the gays” for what she endured on The White Lotus. In the show’s season two finale, the Legally Blonde star was targeted by “high-end gays” trying to murder her character, Tanya McQuoid, in what has since become a viral moment.
After managing to take a few of them out, Tanya falls off a yacht, knocks her head on a dinghy and proceeds to drown to death in the Ionian Sea.
As he hosted the 2023 Golden Globes, Carmichael took the opportunity to tell the gay icon how sorry he is for what her character went through. “As a gay man, I want to apologise to her on behalf of all of the gays for what we did to her on that boat,” the comedian declared as he introduced Coolidge so she could present an award.
Soon after the episode aired, the actress revealed that she “wasn’t happy” about the fate her character was met with. “But Mike White’s a genius — I knew my ending would be good,” she told Variety. “When he told me I was going to die, he didn’t have the ending yet, he hadn’t completely orchestrated it out.
