Electra and Viola, two female penguins from the Oceanogràfic València aquarium in Valencia, Spain, have adopted their first egg!
Oceanogràfic València announced the news on Monday and shared the story of the happy family. Bird-keepers began noticing the two penguins performing breeding rituals with each other and even built a nest, so they gave them an egg of their own. "They put two eggs each inside obviously without knowing they were not fertile, so we put one of the eggs from a different couple into their nest so that they could take care of it," bird-keeper Carlos Barros told UNILAD.
Now that egg has hatched and Electra and Viola have a chick of their own! "The two have been able to adopt, incubate, and raise another couple's egg,"
