An LGBT+ youth has spoken of the moment police joined a mob to arrest him and his friends at a shelter in Uganda. GSN reported on the raid in April.

It saw the local mayor join in beating the LGBT+ people before police placed false COVID-19 charges against them. Weeks later, the magistrate and prosecutor failed to turn up to court for a bail hearing, extending their time in prison.

In the end, the authorities dropped the charges after they had spent 49 days in detention. Their imprisonment had left some with malaria and typhoid symptoms.

However, even then it wasn’t over. Now one young man, using the pseudonym Thomas to protect his identity, says the group is in a desperate state.
