He bought the Miss Universe brand of beauty pageants in 1996, and sold it in 2015. He produced and hosted The Apprentice, a reality television series, from 2003 to 2015. As of 2020, Forbes estimated his net worth to be $2.1 billion.[

William Clay Burchell (Clay) died December 3, 2020 in San Francisco. Clay was born November 3, 1936 in Alexandria, Virginia.

Clay is survived by his best friend, husband, and the love of his life for over 55 years, Michael Zamperini. He is also survived by his Hanai family, Catherine Glaze and Laura Simmons of Tucson, Arizona.Clay and Michael shared an intense interest in travel.

For many decades they enjoyed annual trips to London and Sydney as well as throughout Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia.

They took numerous trips to the various islands of Hawaii. Clay was truly an "island boy" at heart.Clay spent his career in public service with the federal establishment in Washington, D.C.
