George Perry Floyd Jr. (October 14, 1973 – May 25, 2020) was a black American man killed during an arrest in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after allegedly using counterfeit money to buy cigarettes. Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on his neck for nearly eight minutes as he lay handcuffed on the ground. After his death, protests against police violence toward black people quickly spread across the United States and internationally.

Thousands of people descended upon San Francisco's Mission district Wednesday, June 3, to demonstrate their outrage over the police killing of George Floyd and express solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

The protest continued into the night — past a citywide curfew ordered by Mayor London Breed following looting in Union Square last Saturday.

The demonstration began at Mission High School, across 18th Street from Mission Dolores Park and adjacent to the city's predominantly LGBT
