Larry Kramer
Laurence David Kramer (June 25, 1935 – May 27, 2020) was an American playwright, author, film producer, public health advocate, and LGBT rights activist. He began his career rewriting scripts while working for Columbia Pictures, which led him to London where he worked with United Artists. There he wrote the screenplay for the film Women in Love (1969) and received an Academy Award nomination for his work. AIDS-related diseases.

Activist Peter Staley knew Larry Kramer like few did. Both men were influential members of ACT UP — Kramer being one of the group's co-founders — and Staley would go on to launch another HIV organization, TAG.

As Staley writes in a remembrance of Kramer he published following the latter man's death on Wednesday, the two had a fraught relationship.

Staley makes clear Kramer was not perfect, but that he was indeed the "spark" that pushed the government and pharmaceutical industry to take action
