The wait for the new season of Euphoria just got a lot less painful with the arrival of the teaser trailer for its creators’ new series The Idol landing on our screens. In the series, Lily-Rose stars as a rising pop star named Jocelyn under the sway of a self-help guru and cult leader played by The Weeknd aka Abel Tesfaye.
It’s being billed as the “sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood”, which is saying a lot. And if this teaser trailer is any indication, it might just live up to the tagline — and we’re living for it.It’s a quintessential story of drugs, sex, and rock’n’roll — and a whole lot of abs.
Plus, the cast is stacked with queer folk and queer faves. Starring alongside Lily-Rose and The Weeknd are Troye Sivan, Debby Ryan, Rachel Sennott, Steve Zisis, Hari Nef, Juliebeth Gonzalez, Anne Heche, Elizabeth Berkley, and Jennie of the band Blackpink. The series was developed by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim along with Tesfaye, who makes his acting debut in the series.
It’s the culmination of a dream for Tesfaye. “This is my first time ever opening up to anything because I had to spend the last decade invested in this project, the Weeknd,” he told Rolling Stone in 2020. “It really does consume me, so I’ve learned to step away from it a little bit, to miss it a little bit.”“I just want to be a filmmaker,” he added. “I want to make great cinema.” Looks like he might have gotten his chance to do that for HBO.Tesfaye, who is currently in the midst of his After Hours til Dawn tour, debuted the trailer during his concert at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, over the weekend. There’s no official release date for The Idol yet.
