Mista Strange has recalled the freeing moment he realised he could rap about his true sexuality after coming out. The 22-year-old, who stars in BBC Two’s We Are Black and British, came out in 2020 and has been hailed as the first openly gay drill rapper in the UK.
In the new two-part documentary, Mista Strange is joined by five other Black figures from around the UK to discuss their experiences of being Black British, including hard-hitting topics such as racism and the LGBTQ+ community.
During the first episode, which airs tonight, the rapper shares his story of coming out as gay in January 2020. He touches on finally being able to rap about his experiences dating men in his lyrics for the first time.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk ahead of the broadcast, Strange said: ‘Before I came out I started to write some lyrics hinting, very subtle and I was the only person who knew what I was saying. ‘I honestly felt people would notice. ‘After I came out, I always rap about what I’m going through so it would be no different after I’ve come out.
