Award-winning Iranian-born gay photojournalist Shahin Shahablou died in a London hospital April 15 of complications from COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus.

He was 56. Mr. Shahablou, who had mild asthma and a leaky heart valve, had been in intensive care on a ventilator for 19 days.

He had been sick and in and out of the hospital since December when a cough developed and evolved into a chest infection in January.
