Gavin Christopher Newsom (born October 10, 1967) is an American politician and businessman who is the 40th governor of California, serving since January 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as the 49th lieutenant governor of California from 2011 to 2019 and as the 42nd mayor of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011.

Senate Bill 932, created by Wiener and signed by into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom in September, requires health care providers to collect and report both sexual orientation and gender identity statistics for all communicable diseases.
State officials had announced earlier that they would begin doing so voluntarily, and Wiener's legislation mandated it.Newsom said when signing the bill into law that it “will help us better understand the impacts of COVID-19 on the LGBTQ+ community,” but so far, it hasn’t done that.
